Prerequisite Implementation Committee March 6, 2006 Notes
Committee-members’ responses to questions:
1. What if we have to consider modifying the ‘scope’ of the policy implementation?
- Grandfather any existing students (flag new students)
- Focus on students taking 12 credits or more
- Exclude students with prior degrees
- Narrow the scope by targeting a catalog year
- Give current students 1 year to take pre-requisites
- Choose one level of the courses for the first year: ie WR 80, RD 80, MTH 20 and then another level of courses for the following year: ie WR 90, RD 90, MTH 20
- If Then → Statement Needed from Committee? Ie: → We can implement only if we have the means for transcript evaluation. (We have issues with both New + Back-logged transcripts.)
2. What if we have to consider modifying the ‘timing’ of the policy implementation?
- Resource issue is the bottom-line
- Begin another term rather than fall (because it’s the biggest, busiest term)
- Rolling Implementation if only 80’s
- Consider Pre-requisite Challenges
- Phase in a smaller group of pre-requisite requirements or a smaller group of students
- Look at summer or winter terms for a pilot
- How does Summer of Love play into this?
- Summer term, then rolling thereafter
- Proof-of-concept + off-term
- Rolling Implementation
- Consider Developmental Ed faculty numbers/resources as part of the timing decision
- Flexibility is okay – we just need a decision so we know what to plan for
- Number of students emerging + existing students should drive the timing decision
- Do it well + place no undue burdens on stakeholders (students, faculty, student services staff)
- Recognize that we have minimal resources – figure out how to achieve our ends with minimal resources
- Longer registration period for fall
- Financial Aid is the new welfare (full-time insurance); recognize the implications of timing for these students
