Holly Andres
Born in Missoula, Montana, Holly Andres received her BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Montana. Her MFA from Portland State is in Cinema Studies. Andres has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Seattle, Istanbul, Turkey and Portland, Oregon where she lives and works. A commercial photographer, Andres has been featured in The New York Times Magazine, Time, The New Yorker, Art in America, Artforum, Exit Magazine, Art News, Modern Painters, Oprah Magazine, Elle Magazine, W, The LA Times, Glamour, Blink and Art Ltd. In Portland she is represented by Charles Hartman Gallery.
“My work is very much in dialogue with cinema, and even when I’m asked to shoot an editorial portrait, I try to depict my subjects as though they are protagonists within a larger narrative. When I gaze through the camera I try to think like a painter… and consider every aspect of the composition – the colors and textures of the fabrics, the value contrasts of the lighting, the position of the objects and characters, and the dynamic between the figure and ground.” – Holly Andres
