The sense of light and space in this large charcoal drawing are created almost exclusively by line weight and texture; it could almost be a woodcut. The gnarly patterns of bark and rock and water may evoke the fanciful forests of the English Illustrator Arthur Rackham, but this drawing was made on sight from nature. Trowbridge, who is a painter of landscapes with a subtle color sensitivity, has managed to create the feeling of color just in black and white.
