PCC Rock Creek is fortunate to have several plaster and clay maquettes—the term used for three-dimensional sketches—by Frederic Littman. These studies for finished sculpture provide a wonderful insight into the artist's working method. Born in Hungary, Littman studied in Budapest and then in Paris, where his teachers included the famed modern master Aristide Maillol. Littman was among the many artists who fled Europe during World War II. He settled in Portland in the 1940s and taught at both Reed College and Portland State University. As a teacher, Littman provided a direct link to European modernism, and his students included Lee Kelly and Richard Helzer, whose works can also be found in our collection.
