Growing up in San Francisco, Stuart Jacobson found a source of inspiration in Asian art, both traditional and contemporary. Jacobson moved to Oregon to attend Oregon State University, where he studied landscape architecture. Some years ago, however, he began to make stone sculpture, drawing inspiration both from natural forms and from the simplicity of such modern Japanese masters as Isamu Noguchi. Jacobson is interested in contrasts—of light and dark colors, of rough and smooth textures—and in letting his materials speak for themselves.
