Artists have long chosen musicians as subjects, out of a sense of solidarity as much as the fact they remain relatively still enough to draw. Often such drawings create a sense of repeated rhythms that seem to evoke musical intervals, as is the case here, where the relationships of all those parallel diagonals of bows, legs and instruments are punctuated by the verticals like the rhythmic progressions in music. Beckerman was a student for many years at Rock Creek, where she studied painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
