Course Description

Covers abbreviations, prefixes, suffixes, and root words of terminology used in the medical field. Introduces anatomy and physiology, pathological conditions, diagnostic tests, procedures, and treatment for common medical disorders. Covers spelling, defining, and pronouncing medical terms. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify structures and describe functions of each of the body systems.
  2. Describe common diseases and disorders within each of the body systems.
  3. Describe common laboratory tests and medical procedures.
  4. Identify and interpret complex medical terms by breaking them into their component word parts in order to decipher their meaning.
  5. Build medical words from their component word parts.
  6. Spell and pronounce common medical words.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Course outcome assessment will be achieved by the use of discussions, quizzes, and tests, with the addition of case studies, projects, activities, and presentations at the instructor's discretion.
