Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Students will practice the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to perform, with supervision, base brake and anti-lock brake (ABS), suspension and steering repairs on import and domestic cars and light trucks. This course prepares students to service these systems with limited supervision, which is the skill level necessary for employment at an apprentice level.
The broader purpose of this course is to provide students with authentic experience in basic industry skills and concepts, to ensure their success in later courses and on-the-job. These skills include tool use, fastener tightening, precision measuring and shop safety. Concepts and abilities that they will put into practice include craftsmanship, professionalism, communication of inspection results and responsible customer service.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Perform comprehensive suspension, steering and brake system inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs with limited supervision.
- Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.
- Access and utilize repair information in a rapidly changing technology.
- Develop and implement strategies and processes to solve suspension, steering and brake system repair problems.
- Perform suspension, steering and brake system repair to professional and ethical standards.

Students will demonstrate achievement of the course outcomes for Advanced Suspension, Steering and Brakes by completing the following tasks:
1. Perform complete brake jobs on customer vehicles (or school vehicles, as needed)
A complete brake job will include the following tasks, to be completed on customer vehicles as required or school vehicles as needed:
Perform complete vehicle brake inspection
Diagnosis of poor stopping or vibration complaint
Overhauling drum and disc brake systems (including machining)
Servicing brake hydraulic components
Performing repairs to correct brake vibration
Performing power assist brake diagnosis
Adjusting base brake systems
2. Perform comprehensive suspension and steering system inspections, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs with limited supervision.

Computation
Hours: 20Perform brake, steering and suspension system inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs to industry standards.
Students measure brake, steering and suspension system components using precision instruments, such as specialized brake micrometers and dial indicators and compare results with manufactures/industry specifications.
Students perform brake, steering and suspension analysis/testing, using pressure gauges, brake lathes, specialized alignment angle equipment, etc…, and compare readings to manufacturers/industry specifications.
Assessment: Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities. Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.
Communication
Hours: 201. Develop and implement strategies and processes to solve brake, steering and suspension system repair problems.
2. Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.
Students work in teams to communicate with staff to check out tools, school cars, and have repair orders written for lab projects.
Students participate in co-operative learning exercises designed to help reinforce their subject knowledge and promote teamwork.
Students prepare two reports that are either presented orally to the class or in written format to the instructor including all pertinent documentation, photos, video, research, etc. These reports are based on one complete brake repair and one complete steering and suspension repair.
Assessment: Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities. Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.
Human Relations
Hours: 20Perform brake, steering and suspension system repair to the highest professional and ethical standards.
Students build on previous course work in human relations to continue the practice of human relations introduced through class discussions and homework.
Students work in teams to complete assigned lab projects. Team work is focused on working in a diverse cultural environment, being sensitive to Others needs and diffusing difficult situations in a calm and respectful manner.
Students work with lab partners, staff members, and their instructor to bring customer/school cars in /out of the shop for class lab projects.
Assessment: Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities. Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.
