Course Description

Introduces customer work on approved automobiles including diagnosis of electrical problems, reading of schematics, use of test equipment, satisfactory completion of wire connections, testing, repair, and/or replacement of electrical units. This is the capstone course building on the skills, knowledge and abilities learned through successful completion of AM 161 and AM 162. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Students will apply skills acquired from Electrical Systems I & II classes to perform diagnosis of problems on school owned and customers vehicles. Students will be required to successfully diagnose problems pertaining to the following systems: starting, charging, lighting, power accessories, windshield wipers, instrument gauges, horns, parasitic draw, module controls and networks. Theory of multi-plexing will be discussed. Students will practice safe airbag disabling procedures. Classroom review of individual electrical circuits and diagnostic procedures will take place during lecture.
 

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Perform comprehensive electrical system inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs.
  • Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.
  • Access and utilize repair information in a rapidly changing technology.
  • Develop strategies and processes to solve electrical system repair problems.
  • Perform electrical system repair to professional and ethical standards.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1. Perform a complete electrical system inspection.
2. Disable an airbag using correct safety procedures
3. Test, diagnose and document body control systems
4. Test, diagnose and document needed repairs on starting and charging systems
5. Test, diagnose and document needed repairs on electrical accessory systems
6. Prepare and submit repair orders electronically for assessment of diagnosed vehicles

•Perform volt drop tests on various electrical circuits •Safely disable an airbag system •Use analog and digital test equipment •Use all forms of technical service information •Practice safe tool and equipment usage •Read and interpret wiring schematics •Evaluate, test and diagnose electrical circuit problems •Write concise reports detailing diagnosis of electrical circuit problems •Provide accurate verbal description of testing and diagnostic procedures

Hours: 15

Perform comprehensive electrical system inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs of starting, charging and accessory circuit systems to industry standards.

Students measure comprehensive electrical system components using precision instruments, such as digital multimeters and scan tools, and compare results with manufactures/industry specifications.  Apply Ohm’s Law theory to advanced circuit analysis.

Students perform comprehensive electrical system analysis/testing, scan tools,digital multimeters, etc…, and compare readings to manufacturers/industry specifications.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.

Communication
Hours: 4

1. Develop and implement strategies and processes to solve comprehensive electric system repair problems.
2. Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.

Students work in teams to communicate with staff to check out tools, school cars, and have repair orders written for lab projects.
Students present a verbal report to the class on a subject of their choice related to current industry technical advances, innovations, safety standards, and/or diagnostic or trouble shooting procedures related to electrical systems.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.

Human Relations
Hours: 15

Perform comprehensive electrical system repair to the highest professional and ethical standards.
 

Students build on previous course work in human relations to continue the practice of human relations introduced through class discussions and homework.

Students work in teams to complete assigned lab projects.  Team work is focused on working in a diverse cultural environment, being sensitive to Others needs and diffusing difficult situations in a calm and respectful manner. 
Students work with lab partners, staff members, and their instructor to bring customer/school cars in /out of the shop for class lab projects.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.
