Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

1. Aid people involved in the justice system in the recovery process through the application of knowledge of specific assessment protocols and treatment strategies including medication-assisted treatment.
2. Respond to resistance and other obstacles related to motivation with people involved with justice systems.
3. Assist in the facilitation of recovery with the person involved in the justice system using knowledge of cultural and peer group norms.

This is primarily a lecture course. Students will be asked to create a treatment proposal for a specific “client” provided via a case study by the instructor.

1. An assessment process that will extract information from lectures, readings and other multimedia presentations via a test of a basic understanding of the targeted concepts.
2. A project that requires the student to synthesize the course material into an appropriate referral for a fictional criminally involved person who presents with a substance use concern.
