Course Description

Introduces ethical and legal issues applicable to addiction counseling in a clinical setting. Explores the impact of one’s personal value system on decision making in addiction counseling. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify the major components of ethical codes for an addiction counselor.
  2. Apply a decision-making model to address ethical dilemmas relating to addiction counseling.
  3. Identify federal and state laws and agency regulations regarding the treatment of substance-use disorders.
  4. Identify how one’s personal value system impacts ethical decision making in addiction counseling.
  5. Describe how ethics inform the documentation of addiction treatment.
