Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of this course students should be able to:
- Describe the philosophy and research that supports the efficacy of motivational interviewing.
- Apply the spirit, skills, and process of motivational interviewing to a substance use counseling session that explores loss of control as an identifying characteristic of addiction.
- Evaluate a counseling session to determine its compliance with the method of motivational interviewing.
Course Activities and Design
Students will demonstrate via recordings and through the creation of transcripts their ability to apply motivational interviewing in a counseling session with a client that presents with a substance use concern. Students will evaluate their own ability and the ability of their peers to provide addiction specific counseling.
Outcome Assessment Strategies

· The following assessment strategies will be employed:
· 1. Objective tests will be utilized, focusing on intended outcomes imbedded in lectures, readings, and other multimedia presentations.
· 2. The Brief Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (B-MITI) will be used to assess other students and to self-assess level of adherence to the motivational interviewing method of counseling.
· 3. Analysis of video segments that attempt to portray the targeted skills.
