This course involves examining the personality and the interpersonalrelationship style of the student, as these may impact on successful
mastery of the skills being taught. Students will be expected to talk
about current personal life issues and to give and receive feedback regarding
interpersonal functioning. This may result in heightened anxiety or stress
during some class sessions but each student is allowed full control over
the degree of self-disclosure, and each student has the right to stop the
feedback process at any point.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:
1. Maintain at least a minimal level of therapeutic functioning and empathy when working with addiction clients.
2. Utilize a variety of confrontation techniques effectively during a counseling interview (responding to conflicts, feedback, use of questions, and immediacy) when working with addiction clients.
3. Employ motivational interviewing counseling skills to initiate client change process when working with addiction clients.

  2. Write an assessment of personal strengths and weaknesses that the student brings to the helping role.
  3. A professional development plan will be created that will address identified growth areas.
  4. Receive feedback on counseling skills from instructor, using the Carkhoff Scales.
  5. Observe other student tapes in class, and give written feedback on strengths and areas of needed improvement.
  6. Participate in at least 8 hours of homework triad practice outside of class.
