Course Description

Focuses on the integration and synthesis of academic preparation with "real world" addiction counseling experience. Includes consideration of counselor self-care, healthy work practice, professional ethics and ongoing professional development. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course


At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to:
Identify and utilize sources of information that will allow them to keep current with he rapidly changing addiction counseling
field.
Understand the need for and have the ability to create an evolving professionaldevelopment plan in order to remain
current and relevant as a addiction professional.
Understand and differentiate between the following types of relationships needed to maintain a healthy professional addiction
counselor: peers, supervisors and personal therapist.
Identify and articulate essential professional boundaries and ethical conduct in order to maintain appropriate relationships with
colleagues and clients.
Create and implement a personal self-careplan that contributes to his or her longevity and health while serving as an addiction
counselor.

A variety of tools may be used: assigned journals, papers, projects, participation and presentations.
