Course Description

Introduces automotive tools, fasteners, precision measurement, service information systems/manuals and shop procedures. Perform basic automotive service, inspection, and measuring procedures including the practical application of mathematics for the automotive trade. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed to orient the student to appropriate shop protocol as well as to guide students in tool purchase and use. Students will begin performing basic required service procedures: vehicle inspection, oil change, vehicle hoisting, battery and tire inspection. Students gain exposure to varieties of vehicles and service fluid types. Students begin practicing precision measuring skills needed to successfully complete the automotive program.

Intended Outcomes for the course

? Use various hand and power tools related to the automotive field and recognize the differences in manufacturer types.
? Perform basic measurements using standard and metric precision tools according to industry standards.
? Communicate effectively with employers, customers and co-workers.
? Access and utilize repair information in a rapidly changing technology.
? Develop and implement strategies and processes to handle hazardous materials in accordance with current industry standards.
? Perform basic vehicle maintenance to professional and ethical standards.
 

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will demonstrate the course outcomes for Automotive 108 by completing the following tasks:

1.Completing test and worksheet on hazardous waste and Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) Information
2.Following appropriate jacking and hoisting procedures
3.Completing lubrication, and oil and filter change lab
4.Completing various lab practice activities:
•Repair order
•Measuring lab
•Block project
•Applied math practice activities
•Torque lab
•Fasteners
5.Accessing Information Systems via Repair Manuals and computer resources
 

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Students will recognize and appreciate the importance of proper shop procedures and the potential hazards of shop chemicals.

Students will also recognize the importance of vehicle maintenance as an integral component of automotive repair. As part of this introductory class, students will become familiar with basic tool application, Metric and English measurement and practice both precision measuring and basic math skills.

Computation

Outcomes:

1. Perform basic measurements using standard and metric precision tools according to industry standards.
 

Activities:

Students learn, review, and test basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals)
Students use precision measuring tools: inch/metric micrometers, rulers, dial bore gauge, dial indicators, calipers.

Outcomes:

1. Communicate effectively with employers, customers and co-workers.
2.  Develop and implement strategies and processes to handle hazardous materials in accordance with current industry standards.
 

Activities:

Students work teams communicate with staff to check out tools, school cars, and have repair orders written for lab projects.
Students present a verbal report to the class on a subject of their choice related to current industry employment opportunities, environmental standards, technical advances, innovations, safety standards, and/or diagnostic or trouble shooting procedures.

Human Relations
Hours: 15

Outcomes:

1.Perform basic vehicle maintenance to professional and ethical standards.
 

Activities:

Students receive instruction in appropriate protocol for working in a diverse environment.
Students work in teams to complete assigned lab projects.
Students work with lab partners, staff members, and their instructor to bring customer/school cars in /out of the shop for class lab projects
