Course Description

Emphasizes advanced engine performance theory and practice. Includes automotive service work in a live shop setting on campus. This is a capstone course and the first course in a three-course sequence. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course is designed for students with no previous industry experience. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to perform, with limited supervision, the appropriate procedures involved in engine maintenance, problem diagnosis, repair and adjustments on gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles. This will begin the skill level necessary for employment at an apprentice level.

The course material will be presented in a lecture/laboratory format and include videos, handouts, tests and hands-on lab experience in the shop. Students are required to read assigned materials, take notes, complete homework assignments, utilize shop management software and research information in service manuals and with electronic service information systems.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Perform basic vehicle inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs with limited supervision.
  • Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.
  • Access and utilize repair information in a rapidly changing technology.
  • Implement strategies and processes to solve basic vehicle repair problems.
  • Perform basic vehicle diagnosis and repair to professional and ethical standards.
     

Outcome Assessment Strategies

1. Students will demonstrate effective work with fellow technicians in the following ways:.
a. Attendance requirements include penalties for excessive days missed and lates.
b. Lecture participation requirements include bringing textbooks to class, being prepared to take notes and remaining attentive in class.
c. Laboratory participation requirements include demonstrating good craftsmanship, using time wisely, treating equipment properly, using procedures properly, demonstrating acquired skills and correct use of tools.

2. Demonstrate preparedness for ASE testing by achieving a passing score on all quizzes and exams and completing homework assignments.

3. Successful completion of laboratory work in the following areas:

  • Input sensors.
  • Discuss and practice installation and replacement procedures for the ECM.
  • Understand and apply fuel system diagnostic procedures.
  • Discuss and practice On Board Diagnostic (OBD 2) code retrieval and interpretation.
  • Practice the use of the Scan Tool (ST).
  • Practice the use of the lab oscilloscope.
  • Practice diagnostic and repair situations on live customer vehicles.
  • Evaluate student abilities using service procedures and diagnostic procedures.

4. Create and start compilation of electronic portfolio folder (Google Drive).  This includes certifications, resume, letters of recommendations, tool pictures and inventory, independent project, repair orders, write ups and vehicle inspections.

Computation
Hours: 15

Perform vehicle inspection, maintenance, diagnosis and repairs to industry standards.

Students measure vehicle components using varied test equipment, and compare results with manufactures/industry specifications.  Apply all previous course work and test equipment to diagnosis and repair of vehicles to the highest professional and ethical standards.

Students perform vehicle analysis/testing, using all previous test equipment, and compare readings to manufacturers/industry specifications.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.

Communication
Hours: 12

1. Communicate professionally with employers, customers and co-workers using industry standard language and following industry standard protocols.
2. Implement strategies and processes to solve select vehicle repair problems.

Students document repairs and service work performed daily on an electronic repair order including investigating customer complaints, researching systems via Alldata and Mitchell and Technical Service Bulletins.

Students provide written documentation for part requests and verbally explain what parts, repairs and services are needed to customer service personnel.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.

Human Relations
Hours: 15

Perform vehicle repair to the highest professional and ethical standards.

Students build on previous course work in human relations to continue the practice of human relations introduced through class discussions and homework.

Students work in teams to complete assigned lab projects.  Team work is focused on working in a diverse cultural environment, being sensitive to Others needs and diffusing difficult situations in a calm and respectful manner. 
Students work with lab partners, staff members, and their instructor to bring customer/school cars in /out of the shop for class lab projects.

Assessment:  Feedback is immediate, direct and pass/no pass for classroom or lab assessed activities.  Homework and exams are “A-F” grades with direct feedback delivered within 1 week.
