Course Description

Covers dimensions, notes, threads, keys and fasteners, and spur gear terminology. Explores the interpretation of feature size, shape, location, special tolerances, finish treatments, and assembly instructions. This course is also offered as MCH 110B; a student who enrolls in this course a second time under either designator will be subject to the course repeat policy. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Dimensions and design notes on part drawings provides the machinist with a complete description of size, shape, feature location and finish. Additional information such as special tolerances, finish treatments, and assembly instructions are also included so that a part can be manufactured and inspected to design specifications. This module will introduce the student to the various types of dimensions, tolerances, notes and finish specifications used in industry today to carry out these functions.

Threads and keys are used throughout industry to fasten, locate and transmit power in a multitude of different applications. The student will learn different thread forms, representation, and specifications used in industry today along with other power transmission features such as keys and splines.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Identify various types of dimensions, tolerances, notes and finishes from drawings.

  • Interpret different thread forms, representations, and specifications used in industry drawings. 

  • Interpret power transmission connections such as keys and splines.

  • Interpret spur gear terminology and its application in defining spur gear attributes.

Course Activities and Design

Course is designed with entire content coming from select course text and uses practice exercises to build foundation for final test.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will gain knowledge through textbook work and end of chapter assessments, and will complete a final written test to complete the course.
