Course Description

Provides an overview of the responsibilities and expectations for the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician at today's Industrial Worksite. Centers on the electrical, mechanical, fabricating, welding, machining, hydraulic, pneumatic and troubleshooting skill-set required in the Industrial workplace. Emphasizes safe work practices. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Required Course for  Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department Permission to take this course. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Employ a working knowledge of the broad catalog of trouble shooting  skills required of a Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician at an industrial worksite and in subsequent coursework.
  • Employ a working knowledge of equipment maintenance and installation skills required of a Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician at an industrial worksite and in subsequent coursework.
  • Employ a working knowledge of the wide array of testing tools and instrumentation used by the a Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician at an industrial worksite and in subsequent coursework.
  • *Demonstrate safe working practices, including rigging and lock-out/tag-out, according to state and federal regulations. (*Required statewide outcome).
  • *Analyze the properties of materials and how they apply to trade specific fabricating applications. (*Required statewide outcome).

Course Activities and Design

Course activities will be mostly Lecture with appropriate classroom demonstrations.

  • Discuss electrical and mechanical trouble shooting. Demonstrate test equipment.
  • Discuss mechanical equipment repair and installation. Demonstrate test equipment and tools.
  • Discuss welding applications and procedures. Demonstrate welding equipment.
  • Discuss machining applications and procedures. Demonstrate machining equipment.
  • Discuss hydraulic/pneumatic applications and procedures. Demonstrate hydraulic/pneumatic equipment.
  • Discuss fabricating with a variety of industrial materials. Demonstrate fabricating equipment.
  • Discuss OSHA Safety Standards for Industrial Locations.
  • Discuss types of Industrial Instrumentation. Show examples.
  • Discuss types of Test Equipment. Show examples.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be accomplished using skills checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentice's Journey Person.
