Course Description
Introduces the physical dynamics and properties of incompressible fluids and the practical application of fluid power principles involving pressure, flow and force to the hydraulic systems found at industrial worksites. Covers fundamental hydraulic schematics and circuits and the function of components including pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, reservoirs, actuators, fluid conductors, and valves. Introduces hydraulic instrumentation, specialized tools, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Emphasizes safety procedures and practices around high pressure hydraulic equipment. Audit available.
Addendum to Course Description
Required Course for Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department Permission to take this course.
Intended Outcomes for the course
- Apply the operating principles of general hydraulics in order to repair, maintain, install, and analyze a variety of fluid power systems found at industrial worksites.
- Use hydraulic theory along with proper safety procedures to troubleshoot common hydraulic system components at industrial worksites.
- Use hydraulic measuring instruments and tools to diagnose and repair problems in hydraulic systems at industrial worksites.
- *Develop machine shop skills in troubleshooting (*required statewide outcome).
- *Read and Interpret trades specific plans and drawings (*required statewide outcome).
Course Activities and Design
The Course Design is primarily lecture with PowerPoint presentations and projections of hydraulic system schematics. This introductory course emphasizes the mathematics and physics of pressure applied to incompressible liquids using in-class calculation and problem solving.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment will be accomplished using skills' checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentice's Journey Person.
