Course Description

Reviews fundamentals of bearings, shafts, belt drives, chain drives, sheaves, couplings and lubrication used for precise operation of heavy industrial equipment. Includes industrial torqueing, tensioning, and machine condition monitoring techniques. Covers precision alignment using analog instruments such as a straight edge and dial indicator. Covers precision alignment using digital instruments such as lasers. Includes vibration analysis. Emphasizes safety procedures while working near machinery, especially machinery with high speed rotating parts. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Required Course for Apprentices registered in the Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Program. It is open to any other student but requires Department Permission to take this course.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Provide precision horizontal plane and vertical plane alignment for machine to machine applications in order to properly operate heavy industrial equipment and to extend the service life of heavy industrial equipment.
  • Provide precision horizontal plane and vertical plane alignment for rotating shaft to rotating shaft applications in order to properly operate heavy industrial equipment and to extend the service life of heavy industrial equipment.
  • Apply safety procedures and practices when working in proximity to equipment with high speed moving components.
  • *Demonstrate the functions of trade-specific industrial systems (*required statewide outcome).
  • *Develop machine shop skills in troubleshooting (*required statewide outcome).

Course Activities and Design

The Course Design is primarily lecture coupled with demonstrations of alignment procedures for heavy industrial equipment, using both digital and analog tools and instruments.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Assessment will be accomplished using skills' checklists filled out by an adequate sampling of Millwright/Industrial Maintenance Technician Training Agents and/or an Apprentice's Journey Person.
