Course Description

Implements advanced studio watercolor painting techniques, materials, and concepts while addressing historical and contemporary issues to increase visual literacy. Presents a conceptual framework for critical analysis along with basic art theory. Recommended: ART 131. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

• May be taken 1 time for credit.• This is the second in a three course sequence.• A minimum 3 hours of homework per week in the form of private exploration of the concepts and processes introduced in class will be required.• College level reading comprehension is necessary.• Art 284 C fulfills Arts and Letters requirements for Gen. Ed., block transfer and PCC graduation.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1. Further understanding to solve problems creatively using a variety of acquired strategies forexpressing visual ideas through the watercolor painting medium.2. Create personal works of art, which demonstrate a basic understanding of the watercolorpainting discipline, and the processes, materials, and techniques associated with it.3. Employs meaningful questions, identify topical issues, and employ a basic watercolor paintingvocabulary in critical dialogue about the watercolor painting discipline.4. Begin to understand, interpret, and appreciate watercolor painting from different cultures,facilitating a life-long engagement with the diversity of perspectives in the human experience.5. Enjoy a heightened awareness of the physical world, the nature of the relationship of humanbeings to it, and our impact on it via the experience of watercolor painting.6. Implement self-critiquing skills en route to autonomous expression through watercolorpainting with respect to the standards established in contemporary and historical works of art.

Integrative Learning

Students completing an associate degree at Portland Community College will be able to reflect on one’s work or competencies to make connections between course content and lived experience.

Course Activities and Design

• The course may include demonstrations, slides, lectures, video/films andfield trips.• Build upon current skill set with the intent of working towards technical andconceptual proficiency.• Advances to develop personal work with an awareness of historical andcontemporary artists working in experimental media.1)Create projects that incorporate a variety of technical skills with an awareness ofthe inherent characteristics of different water media processes.2)Generate ideas/concepts with an awareness of the intended content of the workproduced.3)Build upon current skill set with the intent of working towards technicalproficiency.4)Practice safe studio practices in regards to the handling of tools, chemicals andmachinery within a communal studio space.5)Utilize the necessary vocabulary specific to water media when participating inclass critiques and discussions.6)Assess and self-critique personal work to strategize creative solutions.• 7)Develop personal work with an awareness of historical and contemporaryartists working in water media.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Complete and present the individual work within a professional studio critique.Prepare projects, assignments, and experiments for presentation.Participate in studio work sessions, class discussions, and critiques.
