Course Description

Explores how to present, explain, demonstrate, and assess flight-related skills and knowledge related to all levels of airplane multi-engine training, while flying from the instructor’s seat. Provides training required to prepare for the initial FAA Certified Flight Instructor knowledge and practical tests, and the FAA Fundamentals of Instructing knowledge test. Flight training fees apply and cover a specific amount of training; additional funding may be required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course covers the Multi-engine Instructor portion of the Hillsboro Aero Academy Flight Instructor Curriculum FAA-approved 141 Training Course Outline (TCO), which includes the flight stages 1 and 2, and ground stage 1.

The following hours of training are required to meet the outcomes for this course, and will be provided by PCC's contracted flight training provider, Hillsboro Aero Academy, under PCC supervision.  Outcomes will be assessed by written, oral and practical (flight) tests. Flight training fees for this class are based on these hours. Rates, and total flight fees are located on the department web site at www.pcc.edu/fly.

Piper PA44 dual (aircraft + advanced CFI)   10
Frasca dual (sim + advanced CFI)   3
Cessna 152 dual (aircraft + advanced CFI) [spins]   1.5
Ground instruction   34
Pre & Post ground instruction  2.5
Stage check dual (PA44 + advanced CFI)   3.5
Stage check ground & pre/post    3.5

Students who exceed certain weight/size limits may be required to use the Cessna 172 in place of the Cessna 152 hours, resulting in higher fees. The total hours of training are the same. Please refer to the Aviation Science Student Handbook for details on this policy.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Fly required maneuvers in multi-engine airplanes to FAA Practical Test Standards from the right (instructor) seat.
  2. Qualify to take the FAA Certified Flight Instructor practical test in a multi-engine airplane, and qualify to take the FAA Certified Flight Instructor and Fundamentals of Instructing knowledge tests.
  3. Provide safe, high-quality flight instruction to students seeking FAA Pilot Certificates in multi-engine airplanes.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing. Evaluation levels will meet or exceed those defined by the FAA Flight Instructor Airplane Practical Test Standards for initial Flight Instructor, multi-engine, and required under 14 CFR 141, FAA Approved Training Course.
