Course Description

Includes subject areas for a single-engine land (SEL) Airplane rating on a Flight Instructor certificate. Covers the aeronautical skill and knowledge necessary to apply for the FAA Flight Instructor – SEL practical test. Flight training fees apply and cover a specific amount of training; Additional funds may be required.

Addendum to Course Description

This course covers the CFI Single-Engine Land add-on Training Course Outline. The following hours of are required to meet the outcomes for this course, and will be provided by PCC's contracted flight training provider under PCC supervision.  Outcomes will be assessed by written, oral and practical (flight) tests. Flight training fees for this class are based on these hours. If the outcomes for this course are met in fewer hours then listed here, unused flight training fees will be returned to the student or funding provider, as appropriate.

The PCC fees do not include FAA written or practical test fees.

Due to equipment limitations, students weighing over 207 pounds must use larger aircraft on some courses.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

  1. Fly required maneuvers in single-engine airplanes to FAA Practical Test Standards from the right (instructor) seat.
  2. Qualify to apply for and take the FAA Flight Instructor single-engine practical test.
  3. Provide safe, high-quality flight instruction to students seeking FAA Pilot Certificates in single-engine airplanes.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Evaluation methods will include written, oral, and practical testing. Evaluation levels will meet or exceed those defined by FAA-S-8081-6D  (or subsequent edition) Flight Instructor Airplane single-engine category add-on, and required under 14 CFR 141, FAA Approved Training Course.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

Part 141 Appendix F requires ground training the following subject areas:

(1) The fundamentals of instructing including—

(i) The learning process;

(ii) Elements of effective teaching;

(iii) Student evaluation and testing;

(iv) Course development;

(v) Lesson planning; and

(vi) Classroom training techniques.

(2) The aeronautical knowledge areas in which training is required for—

(i) A recreational, private, and commercial pilot certificate.

Part 141 Appendix F requires flight training the following subject areas:

(i) Fundamentals of instructing;

(ii) Technical subject areas;

(iii) Preflight preparation;

(iv) Preflight lesson on a maneuver to be performed in flight;

(v) Preflight procedures;

(vi) Airport and seaplane base operations;

(vii) Takeoffs, landings, and go-arounds;

(viii) Fundamentals of flight;

(ix) Performance maneuvers;

(x) Ground reference maneuvers;

(xi) Slow flight, stalls, and spins;

(xii) Basic instrument maneuvers;

(xiii) Emergency operations; and

(xiv) Postflight procedures.
