Course Description

Learners will become familiar with the skills, materials, hardware and equipment necessary to produce industry standard cabinets. Students will learn and demonstrate the safe use of cabinetmaking hand and power tools. Students will draw shop drawings and estimate materials for cabinetmaking jobs. Learners will develop cabinetmaking skills by constructing instructor designed cabinet projects. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Construct industry standard cabinets by drawing and interpreting cabinet shop drawings.  
  • Recognize and select appropriate materials and hardware for intended cabinet projects.
  • Safely and appropriately use stationary and portable power tools and hand tools for cabinet machining, assembly and finishing.
  • Draw and interpret shop drawings using NKBA graphic standards and AWI criteria.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Learners will work collaboratively to construct two cabinet projects from shop drawings provided by instructor.
  • Learners will complete a set of shop drawings and a materials list for a cabinet project proposed by a customer (instructor).
  •  Learners will individually complete two written "Mastery Projects" covering the concepts, themes and issues of the course.
  • Learners will create and organize a cabinetmakers resource manual.

  • Identify and use appropriate tools and methods to fabricate various joint types (i.e. dado, rabbet).
  • Read and interpret shop drawings to determine construction methods, material types hardware and hard surfaces.
  • Practice hand lettering and graphic standards set forth by the National Kitchen and Bath Association.
  • Draw shop drawings using cabinet standards set forth by the American Woodworking Institute.
  • Machine, surface and assemble cabinet parts.
  • Use a hand held calculator.
  • Use MS Excel spreadsheets to develop material orders.
  • Identify various hard surfaces, their uses and installation requirements.
  • Use a drafting table and associated equipment.
