Course Description

Presents the fundamentals of analysis and design of structural systems used in buildings to students with limited technical training. Introduces basic contemporary structural systems in masonry, steel, concrete and wood. Covers determination of support forces, bending moments, shear, strengths, properties of materials, loads and dimensional properties. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion students should be able to:

  • Communicate effectively and collaborate on a constructio project
  • Identify potential loads and forces acting on a building.
  • Identify structural systems and members represented on construction documents.
  • Recognize bending moments, shear, deflection buckling, and how they determine the size and configuration of structural members.

Students will be individually assessed for comprehension using:

1. Weekly Quizzes

2. Examinations

3. Moderated Discussion / Small Group Discussion Peer Feedback

4. Beam Design Problems: Students will work individually and in small groups to demonstrate mastery of simple beam design calculations methods.

5. Reflection Papers commenting on a student's own performance and the work of other students

6. Bridge Design Project: Students will work individually to research, design, propose and present a unique bridge design for a specific site.  Student performance will be assessed based upon demonstrated depth of research, application of student design intent, presentation effectiveness, and participation during other student presentations.
