Course Description
Provides an overview of the basic concepts used in animal exhibit construction, maintenance and repair. Emphasizes safety, identification, selection, usage and care of hand and power tools to complete projects in a team environment. Introduces the use of construction materials, concrete and related hardscapes, reading blueprints, and communication regarding mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. Department permission required. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion, student should be able to:
- Use appropriate safety principles and procedures when operating in a zoo construction, maintenance, and repair environment.
- Identify and select appropriate tools to complete animal exhibit construction, maintenance, and repair projects.
- Use tools and a variety of materials to complete animal exhibitry projects in a team environment.
- Identify and communicate appropriately regarding problems with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Course Activities and Design
The format for this course is a combination of lecture, demonstration, and laboratory experience to provide necessary skills in techniques used in exhibit construction, maintenance, and repairs. Laboratory instruction will be based at the Rock Creek campus building construction technology area.

Issues
- Some zoos lack a professional maintenance staff so zoo keepers are required to perform routine exhibit construction, maintenance and repair.
- Even in zoos with professional maintenance staff ,it will be useful for keepers to know the basics of construction methods and materials as they work constructively and cooperatively with their colleagues.
- After the design process has produced blue print drawings for new or improved exhibits, keepers need to have a working knowledge of blue print reading to effectively interpret these documents.
