Course Description

Introduces skills needed to set-up, operate, and maintain a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), 3D printer machine. Introduces set-up and operation of a CNC router to manufacture a simple project. Introduces computer aided manufacturing (CAM) for creating 2D and 2.5D tool paths. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Requires basic computer operational skills literacy.  Students will propose and complete project work to support theory skills.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Identify processes that can be completed on a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer machine.
  2. Create physical solid parts from digital CAD models using FDM machine. 
  3. Apply basic finishing and processing techniques to the manufactured part.
  4. Identify processes that can be completed on a CNC router.
  5. Set up and operate a CNC router to manufacture a simple project.
  6. Create 2D toolpaths using basic CAM operations. 

Course Activities and Design

The course will be taught through structured training activities and weekly projects to develop competency and will include student proposed project work to reinforce these skills.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be assessed on their ability to setup and operate FDM and CNC router machines to produce acceptable parts that they decide to make in addition to assigned parts. 

With students selecting their own projects to do, instructor and student will negotiate both project scope and acceptable completion quality for grading determination. 

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  1. The ability to identify manufactured projects or products that are compatible for manufacture on FDM machines.
  2. The basic set and operation of an FDM machine using support systems.
  3. The ability to identify manufactured projects or products that are compatible for production on CNC routers.
  4. Basic set and operation of a CNC router to manufacture a project.
  5. Student proposed and completed project work to reinforce these concepts.
