Course Description

Introduces essential computer skills to develop a basic understanding of computers, file management and word processing. Includes an overview of Internet basics and an introduction to the online platform D2L. Covers current computer vocabulary, basic computer tasks, and keyboarding skills. Recommended: (WR 80 and RD 80) or (ESOL 252 and ESOL 250) or equivalent placement test scores. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify and use the basic elements of a Windows user interface
  • Apply skills and concepts for basic file management
  • Create, open, save, edit and print files using a word processing program
  • Access PCC portals using a web browser; download, open, save and print files
  • Open and create e-mail messages and add and open email attachments
  • Demonstrate touch keyboarding of alphabetic keys at minimum speed and accuracy levels

Aspirational Goals

  • Be comfortable using a computer in future coursework.

Course Activities and Design

This course will be taught on campus in a hands-on manner.  It may be CLWEB with a maximum of one hour outside of class completed online.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Completion of all assigned units.
  • Communication using the Internet
  • Timed writings with a minimum speed of 15 words per minute with a maximum of 5 errors
  • Unit Performance Tests or Projects
  • Completion of a File Management Project

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Understand the basic elements of a Windows user interface (UI)
  • Understand the operation of a PC mouse/touchpad/touch screen including clicking, selecting, dragging, and the function of the two primary buttons, scroll wheel, and touch screen options
  • Basic file management:
    • Understand file attributes, file names, extensions, date created and modified, and location
    • Create, rename, copy, delete, move, search, and sort files/folders
    • Hierarchy and use of Computer function
    • Using a portable memory device safely (inserting, removing/ejecting, electronic naming)
  • Touch keyboarding of alphabetic keys at minimum speed and accuracy levels with correct technique
  • Explore some of the auxiliary parts of the keyboard, such as numbers, common symbols, and function keys
  • Be able to create, open, save, edit and print basic files using a word processing program
  • Save and Save As
  • Become acquainted with the Microsoft Office Ribbon and Tabs
  • Access PCC portals using a web browser, download, open, save and print files
  • Communication tools such as email and discussion boards
  • Open and create e-mail messages and add/open attachments
  • Understand the difference between Reply, Reply to All, CC and Bcc; and Forward
  • Work with web browsers and search engines
  • Be familiar with the basics of security and privacy issues
  • Multitasking, including working with multiple documents, different web pages, or a combination
