Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students will be able to:
- Keyboard by touch the alphabetic computer keyboard.
- Use critical thinking skills to apply proper formatting to business and academic documents following professional and industry standards.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
A letter grade will be issued for this course based upon:
Visual technique checks
- Eyes on copy
- Correct fingering
- Correct posture
· Timed production tests on business and academic documents.
· Three-minute timed writings with speed and accuracy rates according to the following scale:
Speed (WPM) Grade Accuracy (Errors)
35+ A 0 – 2
28-34 B 3
20-27 C 4 – 5
15-19 D 6 - 7
May also include other assessment tasks.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
- Understand the importance of touch keyboarding
- Learn correct keyboarding techniques
- Correctly format business and academic documents
- Learn to proofread documents and use proofreader’s symbols
- Obtain an introduction to word processing
Competencies, Skills
· Touch keyboarding of alphabetic keys at minimum speed and accuracy levels.
· Touch keyboarding of parts of the auxiliary keyboard.
· Apply correct keyboarding techniques and safety techniques of relaxation and exercise to prevent computer-related disabilities such as carpal tunnel and eyestrain.
· Demonstrate safe use and handling of hardware and software.
· Keyboarding of the number row and selected symbols with proper fingering.
· Identify and understand proofreader’s marks to edit documents.
· Basic word processing skills:
Creating and formatting basic business and academic documents
Saving documents
Editing documents
Printing documents
