Course Description
This course reviews the concepts of pain management through the use of local anesthetic agents. Participants will learn the fundamental principles of pharmacology related to anesthetic solutions, dosages, vasoconstrictors, drug interactions, neural physiology, anatomical features, medical history evaluation, contraindications for local anesthesia delivery, and the management of adverse side effects, including medical emergencies. The course also includes laboratory and clinical practice in basic local anesthesia injection techniques, including block and infiltration methods.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:
- Explain theories of pain control.
- Select appropriate pain control modality.
- Evaluate physiological aspects of pain control.
- Identify anatomical structures and neural pathways for the purpose of oral local anesthesia.
- Explain neurophysiology and its implications related to local anesthesia.
- Describe the pharmacology of local anesthetics used in dentistry.
- Describe the pharmacology of vasoconstrictors used in dentistry.
- Identify armamentarium associated with local anesthesia delivery.
- Conduct patient evaluation for local anesthesia.
- Demonstrate competence in administering maxillary intraoral anesthesia.
- Demonstrate competence in administering mandibular intraoral anesthesia.
- Employ aseptic techniques with local anesthesia administration.
- Demonstrate safe injection techniques.
- Identify and manage adverse systemic and local complications associated with local anesthetics.
- Manage medical emergencies involving local anesthesia.
- Implement appropriate local anesthesia chart documentation.
