Course Description

Covers computer concepts and the use of information technology in organizations. Includes the basics of Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office Suite as applied to basic uses of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software, and file and folder management. Introduces hardware, software, and tools that businesses use for communication and collaboration. Includes the concepts of ethical conduct in a business/computer environment and the impact of technology on industry and society. Recommended: keyboarding by touch. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Solve basic information systems problems using MS Office products appropriate for the solution.
  2. Communicate in a business environment using the MS Office product appropriate for the communication.
  3. Use computing technology ethically, safely, securely, and legally. 
  4. Describe and analyze computer hardware, software, and the internet.
  5. Use file management techniques for file and directory/folder organization.

Savvy Computer Technology Consumer:Survival Tips

  1. Have trouble-shooting techniques, e.g., screen captures or snipping tools, and why re-boot (re-starting) the computer can help resolve malfunctions, how to research solutions, using “help” function and “Task Manager”
  2. Evaluate purchasing considerations when buying a computer, tablet or notebook
  3. Distinguish between the operating systems and software application
  4. Acquaint students with issues related to Security, Netiquette and Ethics

File & Folder Management

  1. Apply integration of the Office Suite and associated file-management
  2. Create, edit, save, retrieve, re-name, move, delete, and organize files and folders and apply organizational strategies
  3. Create zip-files
  4. Assess when a pdf-format is the preferable format

MS Word - Basic Word Processing

  1. Create, edit, save, retrieve and print MS Word documents
  2. Apply tools to create accessibility
  3. Use formatting tools for a single or multiple page(s), a paragraph and fonts and to adjust a document’s appearance to achieve professional quality documents
  4. Insert citations, bibliographies, footnotes/end notes, table of contents, headers/footers, and page numbering
  5. Make tables
  6. Use bulleted lists
  7. Insert and manipulate images, clip art, other graphics

MS Excel - Basic Spreadsheet

  1. Create, edit, save, retrieve and print MS Excel documents
  2. Apply tools to create accessibility
  3. Create formulas using absolute and relative references; if and average functions; AutoSum, and grand total
  4. Understanding data types (such as strings, numbers, date and time)
  5. Develop decision-making skills to do what-if analysis
  6. Name sheets and defined ranges, freeze columns and rows, and use formula view
  7. Develop skills in managing multiple-sheet worksheets
  8. Size and show/hide rows and columns
  9. Apply sort and filter features to a list

  • Apply standard statistical inference procedures to draw conclusions from data
  • Retrieve information and create reports from relational databases.

Direct instruction (+ study time) in discipline-related computations including:

  • Calculating numeric conversions between binary, decimal and
    hexadecimal base numbers related to memory addresses, memory
    data type representation and media size specifications.
  • Using and following standard statistical procedures.
  • Solving problems using databases.
  • Estimating compression rates, storage capacity, bandwidth, and bus speed.
