On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:

Ï       Describe the basic functions of desktop operating systems

Ï       Explain the different characteristics of

         DOS

         Windows 2000 and XP

        Linux

        Networking Operating Systems

        Server Operating Systems

Ï       Use commands and tools in command line and GUI operating systems to:

        Manage the environment and files

        Run programs

Ï       Define simple LAN and WAN concepts

Ï       Explain how the network operating system controls the network.

This course is presented by means of lecture/discussion sessions, assignments, exams, and lab projects.

Through exams, projects and class assignments students will be assessed to determine if they are able to:

Ï       Define the basic components of an Operating System

Ï       Define the basic components of a Network Operating System and how it differs from a Operating System.

Ï       Define basic components of a network and their functions

Ï       Differentiate between LANs and WANs

Ï       Understand how a single-user operating system, multi-user operating system and network operating system differ.

Ï       Differentiate between command line and GUI operating systems.

Ï       Work effectively on the DOS and Linux command line

Ï       Perform basic user and management functions of a GUI operating system.

Ï       Understand and perform basic file management

Ï       Create partitions and format disks

Ï       Update the Windows environment through update.exe with service packs and suggested updates.

Ï       Differentiate between different filing systems.

Ï       Use file permissions to control access to files

Ï       Manage file ownership

Ï       Boot the system

Ï       Install an operating system

Ï       Install a network client

Ï       Define and understand basic terminology of the Unix operating system.

Ï       Interact with the Microsoft Command Prompt and perform such commands as the following:

u     dir

u     md

u     cd

u     rd

u     copy and xcopy

u     move

u     Changing devices

u     edit

u     type

Ï       Draw simple network diagram.

Ï       Use Windows Start menu, Control Panel, and Administrative Tools to manage the Windows environment and provide access to system components.

Ï       Use Windows Explorer and/or My Computer to manage files.

Ï       Format and partition disk and install Linux Operating System.

Ï       Manage the Windows desk-top, taskbar, system tray and quick launch areas.

Ï       Customize a Windows user’s desk-top.

Ï       In Linux environment, perform such commands as the following:

u     Mount and unmount

u     cd

u     mkdir

u     ls

u     cp

u     Create disk partitions using fdisk.

Ï       Install and use GUI interface for the Linux environment.

Ï       Manage virtual memory and the swap file.

Ï       Install and setup the Red Hat Linux 8.0 OS.

Ï       Work with Linux Daemons to manage print files.

Ï       Setup Windows environment for automatic updates.

Ï       Install Windows Updates.
