Course Description
Intended Outcomes for the course
On successful completion of this course the student should be able to:
Ï Use the Internet efficiently, productively and professionally
Ï Describe the Internet infrastructure and the technical issues encompassing the Internet
Course Activities and Design
This course is presented by means of:
Ï on-campus lectures or distance learning lessons
Ï on-line discussions,
Ï individual lab assignments
Ï group lab assignments.
Students will be required to use essential tools to complete the lab assignments.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
Assessment tasks will include:
- Webliography
- Various hands-on activities related to Internet searching
- Various hands-on activities related to communications tools, multimedia, basic HTML, and transferring and compressing files
- Active participation in small on-line discussion groups
- Objective Exams
- Group assignments
A letter grade will be issued for this course.
Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Ï Present a historical perspective of the Internet and World Wide Web
Ï Describe the technical infrastructure of the Internet including the architecture in terms of client/server.
Ï Develop a basic understanding of the standards and conventions used to transmit information over the Internet.
Ï Incorporate the common Netiquette rules that govern the behavior of users on the Internet into Internet communications.
Ï Differentiate between virus warnings and hoaxes
Ï Describe and differentiate between e-mail, newsgroups, chat sessions, instant messaging, conferencing and mailing lists.
Ï Explore the relationship between the Internet and a variety of operating systems.
Ï Recognize the standards and tools used to measure Internet performance.
Ï Navigate the Web utilizing Uniform Resource Locators, hypertext links, and bookmarks.
Ï Analyze, synthesize, and interpret the process of carrying out an efficient and effective Web search using search engines.
Ï Examine the components of a Web-based document to observe the basics of HTML language.
Ï Discuss issues involving access to and use of the Internet, including: ethics, security, privacy, copyright, freedom of speech, and ease of access to the disadvantaged. Describe the "digital divide".
Ï Identify the basic concepts and uses of multimedia (Sound, Video, Graphics, Animation, Special Documents) on the Internet.
Ï Identify and define E-Business concepts including "privacy statements".
Ï Observe and identify some of the rapid changes taking place on the Internet in terms of technology, tools, virtual reality and interactive programming.
Ï Focus on a topic of interest related to the Internet through the creation of a "webliography" using the skills learned in this class.
Competencies, Skills
Ï Use various search engines
Ï Use efficient searching techniques to narrow a search
Ï Critically analyze and evaluate search results.
Ï Use PCC on-library resources
Ï Use various communications tools such as, email and email attachments; a mailing/discussion list; a newsgroup; a bulletin board; a chat room
Ï Ping and trace an IP address
Ï Upload and download files using FTP
Ï Identify alternate means of transferring files that are more secure than FTP
Ï Compress (zip) and uncompress (un-zip) files
Ï Create a basic web page using only HTML coding with a text editor
Ï Record an audio clip and include in a web page
Ï Compress an audio file
Ï Use pre-written Javascript in a web page
Ï Use various browser plug-ins and players such as, Acrobat Reader, RealOne, Quicktime, and Flash
Ï Create a webliography
Ï Participate in small, on-line discussion groups
Ï Act as a facilitator at least once during the term for an online discussion group

Activities:
Mathematical concepts include TCP/IP and other protocols, measuring Internet performance, constructing Uniform Resource Locators (URL's), analyzing data from web searches, pinging and tracing an IP address, and assigning values to properties in HTML.
Communication
Hours: 10Outcomes:
1. Use the Internet efficiently, productively and professionally
2. Describe the Internet infrastructure and the technical issues encompassing the Internet
Activities:
Use a variety of communication tools such as email, a mailing/discussion list, a newsgroup, a bulletin board and a chat room. Participate in on-line discussion groups. Document activities through written postings on a bulletin board, by email, or using other Internet-based media.

Activities:
Work cooperatively with colleagues via a mailing/discussion list, newsgroup, bulletin board, chat room, email or other Internet-based media. Communicate with the instructor to develop skill in working with supervisors.
