Course Description
Encompasses the multi-faceted aspects of e-commerce information systems. Combines study of network, database and programming concepts with hands on skills. Provides a framework for the analysis of information system based e-commerce solutions to issues surrounding B2B, B2C, and intra-organizational trade. Provides a solid background in critical issues and technologies related to e-commerce. Recommended: CIS 120 and one programming class or instructor permission. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion the student will be able to:
- Describe the infrastructure for E-commerce and key features of Internet, Intranets and Extranets and explain how they relate to each other.
- Demonstrate an understanding of E-commerce related programming, database, and networking issues.
- Explain key issues related to Internet security standards, cryptography and authentication, and firewalls.
- Recognize security issues and discuss risks and risk management issues.
- Evaluate electronic payment systems
- Analyze the effectiveness and uses of intelligent agents - push technology
- Discuss technical support and customer service needs related to the Internet
- Recognize E-commerce legal issues such as content ownership and liability, information privacy, copyright and trademarks, and taxation.
- Analyze Internet trading relationships including business-to-consumer, business-to-business, government-to-consumer, and intra-organizational.
- Determine the appropriateness of EDI and/or the Internet for E-commerce transactions.
- Evaluate technologies, concepts, strategies, and trends related to E-commerce.
Outcome Assessment Strategies
To assess achievement of the outcomes any combination of the following may be used:
- Written examinations and/or quizzes;
- E-commerce case study analysis;
- Individual or group e-commerce related projects;
- Presentations;
- Research assignments;
- Homework and/or lab assignments that demonstrate the application of appropriate e-commerce technologies;
- Participation in class activities
- Interactive role-plays.

Activities:
Direct instruction (+ study time) in discipline-related computations
involving data validation using regular expressions, data security and
user authentication involving cryptography, and data transmission
protocol transformations to insure reliable delivery.
