Course Description
Introduces fundamentals of Modern Dance technique with a focus on correct alignment, development of strength, flexibility, range of motion, and stability, and dance specific terminology. D 130A and PE 121A cannot both be taken for credit. Audit available.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon successful completion, students should be able to:
- Apply lessons in Modern Dance-specific anatomy, safe practices, and injury prevention in order to improve wellbeing and Modern Dance performance.
- Engage in and appreciate different forms of artistic expression through Modern Dance.
- Interpret Modern Dance terminology to critically analyze performances.

- Explore the fundamentals of Modern Dance
- Learn and apply safe practices related to technical training in dance
- Apply feedback given to foster improvement of technique
- Identify and use internal and external rotation in the hips (parallel and turn-out)
- Identify and use basic arm positions
- Introduce concept of musicality
- Examine line and shape
- Utilize axial and locomotor movements
- Introduce concepts of ensemble thinking
