Course Description

Covers intermediate clinical training and practical experience in general dentistry and dental assisting duties and responsibilities. Introduces dental specialties such as periodontics, oral surgery, and periodontal surgery. Provides an opportunity to gain chairside dental assisting experiences through clinical rotations at OHSU and PCC Dental Clinic. Introduces electronic records and dental software.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  1. Perform, at an intermediate level, dental assisting chairside duties while demonstrating professionalism, safety, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the operator.
  2. Demonstrate the various instruments and instrument grasps that relate to dental specialties.
  3. Demonstrate the procedural steps, armamentarium, instrumentation, and post operative instructions for various dental specialties.
  4. Demonstrate competence in dental charting.
  5. Demonstrate professionalism towards patients, students, dentists, and staff while assisting at OHSU.
