Course Description

Advanced clinical dental assisting with instruction in dental specialty procedures.

Addendum to Course Description

Students must have completed DA 112 and DA 113 with grades of C or better, or have instructor or program administration approval.

This course is structured to correlate with the clinic activities of DA 115.

Intended Outcomes for the course

To apply the knowledge to:

  • Perform as an active member of the dental team during a dental office medical emergency,  pediatric dental procedures, removable prosthodontic procedures, public health dentistry, inform patients of oral health products and their use, and demonstrate responsible, safe, and effective methods for the disposal of hazardous waste that benefits the stability of the environment in which we live.

  • Describe and discuss the topics listed above and the importance of this knowledge to an employed dental assistant.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Complete textbook, assignments, and term paper, at 70% or better.

  • Recognize and understand specialty dental assisting, oral hygiene home care, and waste disposal knowledge through the completion of midterm, and final examinations at 70% or better.

  • Consistently attend (at least 70%) classroom lecture sessions.

Competencies and skills:

  • Describe the signs and symptoms of a medical emergency and compare the role of the dental assistant and dentist in handling such an emergency in the dental office.

  • Identify and list the necessary contents of a medical and first aid kit.

  • Describe how a complete and current medical history can help prevent medical emergencies.

  • Explain oral hygiene home care instructions to a dental patient.

  • Discuss the role of the dental assistant while managing a child patient.

  • Identify and compare basic parts of partial and full removable dentures.

  • Describe the delivery process and patient instructions for a partial or full denture placement.

  • Understand and describe the impact of dental hazardous waste on the environment.

  • Define and discuss the importance of Public Health Dentistry.
