Course Description

Advanced clinical experience, including dental specialty procedures. Students spend three days per week in dental office internships.

Addendum to Course Description

Students must have completed DA 112 and DA 113 with a grade of C or better, or have an instructor or program administrator approval. Concurrent enrollment in DA 114 required.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Perform at an advanced intermediate level (employment entry level), dental assisting chairside skills utilizing safe methods and demonstrating professionalism in the internship dental office assignment.

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform procedures that require independent, direct patient care skills in an efficient, professional manner.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Attend 3 clinical lab sessions.

  • Complete 9 skill evaluations from extramural clinical experience.

  • Complete final examinations (=>75%).

  • Complete 10 journal entries from extramural clinical experience.

  • Complete clinical lab activity sheets.

  • Consistently attend (at least 90%) dental office extramural clinical experience days including specialty and volunteer sites.

  • Oral Health Community Service Project.

Competencies and skills:

  • Follow OSHA Universal Precautions and Hazardous Material Guidelines prior to, during and after providing dental care on a patient in the dental office internship and PCC Dental Clinic.

  • Assess current health of patient using health history information, taking and recording vital signs, and using observation skills.

  • Accurately record existing dental conditions treatment plans and treatment rendered.

  • Work collaboratively as a dental team member.

  • Demonstrate preparation and delivery of dental procedure armamentarium.

  • Utilize ergonomically correct positioning during treatment procedure.

  • Practice patient management through the use of inquiry and listening communication skills.

  • Demonstrate advanced intermediate (employment entry-level) four-handed dental assisting skills.

  • Explain dental restoration procedures to patient.

  • Manage time efficiently.

Activities:

Students work as members of the dental team to complete assigned activities during private practice externships and debriefing sessions utilizing team building concepts as introduced in DA 111.
