Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
Includes the safe operation of slowspeed handieces, coronal polihing, restoration evaluation, restoration margination, restoration polishing and sealant placement. No longer includes rubber dam placement and removal.
Intended Outcomes for the course
1. Demonstrate coronal polishing on both a clinical manikin and, subsequently, an adult dental patient using correct and safe technique.
2. Demonstrate amalgam polishing on three posterior restorations on clinical manikins, and, subsequently, one posterior restoration on an adult patient using correct and safe technique.
3. Demonstrate sealant placement on an extracted tooth in the lab setting , and subsequently on two surfaces for a patient using safe and effective techniques.
4. Complete four examinations on knowledge-based information.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
1. Follow OSHA Standard Precautions and Hazardous Materials Guidelines while providing patient care during expanded function procedures.
2. Explain procedures to patient and answer basic questions regarding amalgam and coronal polishing using inquiry and listening communications skills.
3. Review patient health history for possible contra-indications to treatment.
4. Follow treatment plan as indicated by examining dentist.
5. Use proper asepsis and safety techniques while preparing armamentarium.
6. Demonstrate hand and rotary instrument applications.
7. Accurately document completed procedures in patient chart.
8. Utilize ergonomically correct positioning during treatment procedures.
9. Work collaboratively as a team member.
10. Manage time effectively.

Activities:Students work with /on each other and with/on dental patients to practice and complete coronal polishing and sealant placement procedures.
