Course Description

Continues clinical training and practical experience in expanded functions dental assisting duties as allowed by the Oregon Dental Practice Act. Focuses on the rationale and procedures for Expanded Functions Orthodontic Dental Assistants (EFODA) certification and orthodontic specialty procedures.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Perform, at a basic level, expanded functions of orthodontic duties while utilizing correct and safe methods.

  • Perform, at a basic level, expanded functions of orthodontic duties while utilizing correct and safe methods.

Students will role play treatment for the orthodontic patient from their first  to their last visit. Students will specifically role play how to communicate with patients about their treatment needs, and what will happen during the multiple appointments their patients will need for the approximately 24 months of treatment.

Students will role play the following appointments during this course:

  • Medical history review
  • Initial records - impressions, dental images and dental photos specific for orthodontic treatment
  • Separators placement
  • Banding appointment
  • Adjustment appointments 
  • De-banding, cement removal and retainer (s) appointment
  • Post-treatment records - dental images, dental photos
