Course Description

Continued study of dental materials to include those used specifically in the processes of crown and bridge construction.

Addendum to Course Description

Students must have successfully completed DA 130 with a C or better, or have department permission to register.  Study also includes expanded functions of dental assistants. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

DA 132:
1. Recognize the characteristics and uses of laboratory materials used in the fabrication and placement of a variety of dental restorations.
2. Understand the uses and limitations of materials used in coronal polishing and other expanded duties procedures.
 

Course Activities and Design

This course will be presented in a hybrid format to include an online portion in addition to scheduled face to face meetings in a classroom setting.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

DA 132:

  1. Recognize and describe characteristics and uses of dental materials in a series of assigned projects
  2. Complete a comprehensive final exam

  • New technologies used in dentistry
  • Denture Soft liner
  • Denture Fabrication

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  1. Transfer dental materials knowledge and skills to DA 119 Expanded Functions I.
  2. Explain the characteristics, properties and uses of the many types of metallic restorations fabricated in the lab and cemented in the oral cavity. 
  3. Discuss investment materials and describe the processes used during casting procedures.
  4. Describe burnout and casting procedures for inlay and crown construction.
  5. Describe the types of ceramics used in dentistry
  6. Describe the fabrication of temporary crowns
  7. Describe the steps in placement of a denture soft liner.
  8. Recognize the new technologies used in dentistry today.
  9. Describe the steps in fabrication of a full denture.

Outcomes: Understand the uses and limitations of materials used in coronal polishing and other expanded duties procedures. Activities: Students work in groups to research new technology and present information in both oral and written form.

Activities:Student team work during group project that encourages active learning, respect of diverse talents and enabling student exchange of information by utilizing previous team work information presented in DA 111.
