Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.
- Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting.

Competencies and Skills
1. Discuss situations which arise in the dental office environment which require strong verbal communications skills.
2. Define a variety of terms used to describe personal computers and their function.
3. Complete laboratory exercises and projects in inventory control and recall system management as assigned using a personal computer and assigned software.
4. Research the local job market for dental assistants and explain the steps to follow in an effective job search.
5. Compose a personal resume to be used in the job search.
6. Discuss the factors involved in a job interview and compare effective and ineffective interviews.
7. Discuss the importance of follow-up procedures to the job interview.
8. Demonstrate effective writing skills by composing a professional resume.
Related Instruction
Computation
Hours: 8- Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.
- Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting and obtain employment as a dental assistant.
Activities:
- Direct instruction in and an associated assignment in designing a dental office to include floor plan measurement and layout as well as researching equipment purchasing costs and installation.
- Utilizing a variety of dental office software, complete dental office scheduling activities.
Communication
Hours: 12- Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.
- Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting and obtain employment as a dental assistant.
Activities:
- Develop and write a portfolio project to include, a cover letter, resume, thank you letter interview questions using word processing and a Mock Job Interview.
- Guest speaker from the PCC Student Employment Office, exploring job search, developing and practicing interview skills, developing a resume.
Human Relations
Hours: 9- Describe and discuss the purpose and advantages of supply inventory and patient recall systems management in dental office settings.
- Apply communications skills and knowledge of office management in the cooperative education setting and obtain employment as a dental assistant.
Activities:
- Small Group office design project.
- Front desk rotation/office practicum utilizing skills already learning in patient management and team work.
