Course Description

Studies anatomical characteristics of all permanent and deciduous teeth and their surrounding tissues.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

  • Complete a series of weekly quizzes on all anatomic features of the human dentition.

  • Complete a comprehensive final exam

  • Complete an assignment on occlusion

  • Draw selected views of permanent and deciduous incisors, canines, premolars, and molars.

  • Complete an anatomical wax- up of two selected teeth

  • Dental anatomy nomenclature and usage

  • Root and crown anatomy

  • Embrasures and contact points, relation to disease.

  • Anatomic changes due to age

  • Developmental pits and grooves

  • Accurate recording, documentation

  • Common restorative procedures

  • Contours and relationships

  • Root morphology

  • Tooth eruption and exfoliation

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

1. Identify all primary and permanent teeth by their anatomic features, age and disease changes.
2. Draw selected views of teeth that are easily recognized by their contours and anatomic features.
3. Describe the unique anatomic features for all teeth in the human dentition.
4. Identify occlusion problems and record their presence on the dental record.
5. Describe anatomic considerations demonstrated in common clinical dental restorative procedures.
