Course Description

Provides information on the Pro/Engineer Interface, command structure and solid modeling. Develops knowledge and skills in the creation and detailing of solid models. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

The student will be able to:

  • Sketch two-dimensional profiles to generate three-dimensional solid models.
  • Create features such as holes, cuts, extrusions, fillets, and chamfers.
  • Demonstrate competency with various menus and modification commands.
  • Create three-dimensional datum planes using Pro/Engineer software.
  • Generate revolved parts, swept features, and blends.
  • Develop assemblies of multiple solid models.
  • Develop engineering drawings that include assemblies

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Individual and full class discussion; lab drawing assignments; exams; and final project deliverables may be used to assess outcomes.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)

  • Civil, industrial, manufacturing, mechanical and other engineering students must be able to visualize solid objects to succeed in subsequent mechanics and design courses.
  • Engineers need to be able to communicate with each other, and with manufacturing and construction personnel, using graphical representations of physical objects.
  • Solid modeling software is widely used in the engineering professions.
  • Many engineering graduates enter the workplace by performing computerized graphics manipulations.

Content

  • Creating a Simple Object using Sketcher
  • Creating Holes and Cuts, the Model Tree, and Feature Relations
  • Revolved Protrusions, Mirrored Copies, Rounds and Chamfers
  • Modeling Utilities, Parent/Child Relations, and the 3 R's
  • Sketcher Tools and Datum Planes
  • Revolved Features, Patterns, and Copies

Competencies and Skills
The student will be able to:
  • Communicate effectively using computerized graphical techniques.
  • Demonstrate competency using Pro/Engineer graphics software.
  • Create solid models for use in subsequent engineering courses or within industry.
  • Create a portfolio of Pro/Engineer drawings to demonstrate their abilities.
