Course Description
Addendum to Course Description
This is an outcome based course utilizing a lecture/lab format and includes videos, written assignments, demonstrations, lectures and hands on learning. It prepares the student to confidently diagnose and repair diesel fuel systems in an industrial environment.
Intended Outcomes for the course
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Apply diesel engine knowledge to diesel fuel injection systems functions and how they relate to engine operation and performance.
- Competently troubleshoot, evaluate and repair diesel fuel injection systems.
- Disassemble, test, and reassemble fuel injection components.
- Test diesel engines for fuel system malfunctions.
- Apply knowledge of diesel fuels and fuel injection systems and how they relate to engine performance.
- Research and locate repair literature.
- Use protective gear and safe procedures in all work areas.

Course Content (Themes, Concepts, Issues and Skills)
Develop skills to disassemble, inspect, reassemble and test fuel injection components and understand the relationship between component failure and engine operation.
• Learn about various diesel engine fuels.
• Learn about diesel fuel transfer pumps.
• Learn about fuel nozzles and injectors.
• Learn the tools necessary to diagnose and repair fuel system components.
• Learn identification of different fuel system designs.
• Learn the operation and adjustment procedures for timing units and fuel ratio controls.
Knowledge of how diesel engines operate.
• Learn the relationship among the internal engine components.
• Learn how fuel metering effects horsepower, torque and emissions
Skills in diesel fuel system failure diagnosis.
• Learn to recognize failures and their causes.
• Learn the resources available to the technician for research and failure identification.
• Learn to interface with electronic engines.
• Use proper service literature, electronic diagnostics software.
• Learn to navigate electronic engine software.
• Learn electronic engine software diagnostic tests.
