Course Description

Introduces basic electrical and electronic fundamentals needed to properly diagnose and repair the complex electronics installed on Caterpillar machines. Requires a dealer letter indicating secured internship at a participating Caterpillar Dealership.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Use  an understanding of basic electrical theory to test electronic components and basic Caterpillar electrical systems.
  • Use Caterpillar electrical schematics to accurately test Caterpillar machine systems and trouble-shoot, diagnose, and repair electrical components and electrical systems.

Course Activities and Design

·This is an outcome-based course utilizing a lecture / lab format. This course includes videos, assignments, demonstrations, lectures, and hands on learning. Course will be taught using Caterpillar equipment and curriculum.

·            Multiple choice, true/false, fill in the blank, short answer and essay testing

Upon completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Use  an understanding of basic electrical theory to test electronic components and basic Caterpillar electrical systems.
  • Use Caterpillar electrical schematics to accurately test Caterpillar machine systems and trouble-shoot, diagnose, and repair electrical components and electrical systems.

There will be direct instruction and student study and practice the following skills and knowledge:

  • Ohm’s law (E=IxR)
  • Calculate circuit resistance, amperage and voltage drops.
  • Watt’s law (P=IxE )
  • Calculate power of a component or circuit.
  • Series Circuits
  • Parallel Circuits
  • Compound Circuits
  • Math formulas involved in computing voltage drop, amperage, total resistance and power in different types of electrical circuits for construction or diagnosis.
  • Disassemble, diagnose, assemble and test starters and generators. This includes recording and calculating values based on meter readings.
  • Automotive batteries. This involves calculating test values according to industry specifications.
  • Motor and generator theory. This involves being able to calculate motor torque and horsepower values using RPMS, Amperes, and Volts.
