Course Description

Initial skill development in the use and operation of dental laboratory equipment, the application of safety principles, and introduction to the fabrication process of complete removable dentures. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

This course introduces the student to dental laboratory activi­ties through preliminary construction processes of complete dentures. Students will begin construction of complete dentures following step-by-step instructions that are both written and demonstrated. Specified construction criteria is also given. Didactic material taught in DT 151 Science of Dental Materials I, and DT 141 Denture Techniques I, is applied and correlated to work projects. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory equipment and safety measures are emphasized. Students will work independently at assigned work stations. Individual instructor help will be provided when deemed necessary. Prerequisite - Students must be accepted into the Dental Laboratory Technology Program through the formal application process and be concurrently enrolled in DT 120, DT 141 and DT 151, or have course instructor and program administrator approval.

Intended Outcomes for the course

1. Pour dentulous and edentulous casts.

2. Fabricate custom impression trays.

3. Construct Base Plates.

4. Design and construct occlusal rims on baseplates.

5. Operate laboratory equipment using proper safety techniques.

6. Articulate and demonstrate proper biohazard handling procedures.

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Student progress will be evaluated by the quality of work produced at various stages throughout the course, and according to specific and described criteria. Speed or efficiency may be included in the evaluation process. Specific evaluation criteria will be distributed and explained prior to each work assignment.

Direct instruction on communicating with dental lab professionals through the use of inquiry and listening skills. Students discuss/query/clarify lab procedure process as shown during computation instruction, fabricate impressions and critique work.
