Course Description

Covers fabrication of partial dentures, partial denture frameworks, immediate dentures and overdentures. Audit available.

Tooth waxing will also be introduced. 

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Fabricate removable partial dentures.
  • Design and fabricate maxillary and mandibular immediate dentures and overdentures with surgical trays and custom trays.
  • Practice infection control procedures.

Course Activities and Design

Student progress will be evaluated according to the quality of the work produced in comparison to specific and described criteria. Speed or efficiency may be included in the evaluation process.

Themes", Concepts and Issues: Reline and Rebase Denture, Immediate Denture/Overdenture with Surgical Trays, Face Bow Mountings, Wax Teeth, Build Up and Articulate Wax Teeth On Models, Handle Potential Biohazard Materials.

COMPETENCIES:

Fabricate removable partials

Successfully construct an immediate overdenture with surgical trays.

Carve wax teeth to scale.

Wax-up teeth on opposing model to proper contours and articulate.

Practice proper asepsis.

  • Practice infection controls and procedures
  • Design and fabricate maxillary and mandibular immediate dentures and overdentures with surgical trays and custom trays.

  • Apply mathematical principles to classify edentulous arches, design partial dentures, surveying casts, framework wax-up, casting and repairs.
  • Use proper ratios of investment and refractory materials to achieve the proper expansion of metal during casting.
  • Apply the proper temperature at the correct rate to avoid over expansion and fractures in investment material when burning out wax when casting ring.
  • Use proper settings when operating the induction casting machine.

  • Use proper terminology when using the equipment while fabricating partial dentures.
  • Use proper terminology when communicating with doctors, staff and patients about different procedures of fabricating immediate dentures and over-dentures.

  • Fabricate removable partial dentures.
  • Design and fabricate maxillary and mandibular immediate dentures and overdentures with surgical trays and custom trays.

  • Understand the ethics of the dental profession when working with and communicating with doctors, dental staff regarding prescriptions and changes due to case limitation.
  • Interact with patients, or through the doctor, being mindful of patients's wants and needs relating to aesthetics and the limitations in the process.
