Course Description

Covers the study of philosophy, materials, design and fabrication processes of removable partial, immediate and overdentures. Audit available.

Alternative materials and processes will also be presented.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Describe the philosophy of removable partial, immediate and overdentures, and the materials and techniques involved in the design of these types of dental prosthesis.
  • Explain the steps in the process of design and construction of a finished removable partial denture, immediate denture and overdenture.

  • Discuss the philosophy and purpose of removable partial dentures, immediate and overdentures.
  • Identify and describe the component parts of a removable partial denture, immediate and overdentures and compare laboratory procedures with those of complete dentures.
  • Explain the nature and use of surveyors as a part of the construction process.
  • Describe a variety of different types of edentulous situations as related to partial denture, immediate and overdenture construction.
  • Describe, discuss and compare the ethical and legal responsibilities of the dentist and the laboratory technician in the design and  fabrication of removable partial dentures, immediate and overdentures
  • Describe the purposes and procedures used to block out undercuts and relieve the partial denture.
  • Identify spruing and investing materials and discuss the methods and procedures as used in the construction of removable partial dentures.
  • Discuss burnout and casting procedures used in the construction of removable partial dentures.
  • Describe the materials, procedures and techniques used in the post-casting finishing process.
  • Select, arrange and adapt artificial teeth to a removable partial denture.
  • Discuss a variety of alternative techniques and designs in removable partial dentures.
  • Explain repair procedures for broken denture base retention, broken clasp replacement and broken lingual bar.
