Course Description

A workplace preparation course including professional ethics, organizations and opportunities, certification requirements and an overview of the dental care delivery system in Oregon. Also introduces new products and procedures and have an opportunity to visit local laboratories. Audit available.

Intended Outcomes for the course

  • Students will pursue continuing education and eventual certification in dental lab technology.
  • Students will recognize the legal and ethical bounds of practice of all members of the dental team.
  • Students will demonstrate competency by performing specialty practical projects using OJT commercial lab standards with practical cases from area labs.

Course Activities and Design

The course offers guest speakers", product demonstrations," case study/discussions of legal and ethical matters pertaining to the dental and field trips covering topics of interest in the industry.

  • Quizzes and final exam
  • Attendance
  • Participation in case study discussions
  • Satisfactory completion of practical cases using commercial lab time", quality and infection control criteria.

    *  The role of the dental lab technician in the dental care delivery system.
    * The work authorization/prescription
    * Regulatory agencies for dentistry, denturists, dental lab technology.
    * Ethical vs. Iegal
    * Dental/health care ethics
    * New products and processes.
    * Business ethics for laboratory owners
    * Professionalism
    * The certification process
    * Continuing education
    * Local, state and national organizations.
    * Efficiency in movement and time management.

Skills and competencies:

   1. Describe the general provisions of the Oregon Dental Practice Act.
   2. Explain the licensure provisions of the Practice Act and differentiate between licensure and certification.
   3. Describe and discuss the regulatory bodies that make rules relating to dentistry and allied disciplines.
   4. Identify the local, state and national organizations that foster certification and continuing education and certification for dental      
       laboratories
   5. Define the scope of practice for dentists, dental lab technicians and denturists.
   6. Identify the penalties and ramifications of practicing outside the legally defined scope of practice.
   7. Discuss basic ethical theory and relate it to personal and professional life.
   8. Differentiate between legal and ethical violations.
   9. Demonstrate an understanding of the work authorization/prescription of the dentist in accordance with regulation in the state of   
       Oregon.
  10. Discuss and attempt to resolve a variety of ethical dilemmas presented in the form of case studies through class discussions.
  11. Recognize and describe the advantages and disadvantages of a variety of new products and processes available.
  12. Define professionalism and the role of continuing education.
  13. Demonstrate proficiency/competency in performing crown and bridge specialty laboratory procedures using only practical lab
         materials.
  14. Demonstrate proficiency / competency in performing ceramics specialty laboratory procedures using only practical lab materials.
